Ekphrastic Poetry Workshop with Santa Fe Poet Laureate Emeritus Valerie Martinez & Dr. Shelle Sanchez

ImageImageImageImage

Ekphrasis (also spelled “echprasis”) is a direct transcription from the Greek ek, “out of,” and phrasis, “speech” or “expression.” Ekphrastic writing is poetry/prose that comments upon another art form, e.g., a poem about a photograph or a novel about a film.

Thank you Val and Shelle for giving our students the experience of a lifetime.

Blog Day 3 by Espi & Abi “1st Day on Stage”

Today we went to one of the auditoriums and read some of the poems, short stories, and musical performances people prepared. It was a good time seeing what the other people could do, their strengths and their weaknesses. In our opinion it was still really awkward since we were the youngest people there. Being on the stage wasn’t very helpful to how shy we were, but it seemed it was helpful for the other people. We were amazed at the other people’s talents, including a new student that had her first day today. We got a couple of visitors and one of them is very good at painting (see pic attached by Tyler BKA “ANSER”)
We had most of the class reciting poems they memorized, and they were very confident in what they were doing and that made us more intimidated. However, we still completed the exercise. The poems ranged from love to betrayal. There was a monologue, a short story, beat boxing, and some writing prompts also involved.
